Deputy replies to OD dispatch and gives Narcan dose

Story by Tony Rhodin, Lehigh Valley Live - 11/1/2017
A Northampton County sheriff's deputy, out late Wednesday morning serving papers as part of his role in the department's Civil Unit, heard a call on the police radio for a possible overdose and realized he was only a minute away, Sheriff David Dalrymple said. Deputy Scott Kuehner, who has been with the department for 10 years and is one of its first aid instructors, was in the area of South 25th Street in Palmer Township when he and township officers arrived at the vehicle that held the woman who called for help and a man who was slumped over, Dalrymple said. All sheriff's department vehicles -- and numerous locations in county buildings -- have supplies of Narcan, which can reverse the effects of an overdose, Dalrymple said. Kuehner saw the man's skin was ashen and his breathing slowed, so he administered a dose of Narcan, Dalrymple said. By the time Suburban EMS arrived, the man, who the sheriff didn't name, was revived and breathing deeper, Dalrymple said.
